What Brevo is, and who it's actually for

Brevo is a tool built for businesses that want to manage all their customer communication from one place. This lesson explains what it does, who it fits, and the honest difference from Kit, which I've already covered on this site.

A customer just placed an order. You need to send a thank-you email, and announce your new product a week later. How are you handling that right now? By hand, or not at all?

Most small business owners answer that with "by hand, whenever I remember." Brevo exists to close exactly that gap.

What Brevo actually does

Brevo is a marketing and automation tool built for businesses to manage all their customer communication from a single panel. You send campaign emails, set up post-purchase automation, and can even manage extra channels like SMS and WhatsApp from the same place.

The logic is simple: the moment a customer hands you their email (or phone number), every message after that flows through one system. Campaigns, automations, thank-you emails, all in the same panel.

How it's different from Kit

I cover Kit in a separate series on this site. Both send email, but they sit in different spots. Kit leans toward creators and personal brands: telling stories, growing a subscriber base, launching a product. Brevo is stronger on the business and transactional side: order notifications, campaigns, automation flows, the kind of commercial communication a business runs on. Neither is better, they solve different jobs.

Who this is for

This tool makes sense if you already have a customer list and want to send it regular campaigns or automated flows. If you need things like a post-purchase thank-you email, an abandoned-cart reminder, or a campaign announcement, Brevo is built for exactly that.

If you don't have a list yet, you need to figure out how you're building one first, and the second lesson in this series will help: it walks through importing a consent-based list the right way.

How pricing works

Brevo's pricing isn't based on how many people are on your list, it's based on how much you send. There's also a free plan that doesn't expire. Check Brevo's own page for current plans and terms.

Lesson checklist

  • I understand Brevo's strength is business and transactional email, and how that differs from Kit
  • I've thought about whether Brevo fits my situation (do I have a list, what automation do I actually need)
  • I know pricing is based on sending volume, and that I should check Brevo's own page for current numbers

Next lesson: setting up your account, importing your consent-based list the right way, and sending your first campaign, step by step.
