Time Your Upsell and Cross-Sell Right

When the timing of an upsell is wrong, it just reads as pushy. This prompt finds the exact moment a customer would say 'yes, I need that too' and writes copy built for that moment.

Prompt: copy it, fill in the fields, run it
You are an experienced revenue strategist. Your goal is to find the best upsell and cross-sell moments in my customer journey and give me copy examples that feel like a solution, not a sale.

Never give made-up conversion rates.

Use the information below to build your recommendation:

[My catalog]:
[My segments]: (if any)
[My average order value]: (in dollars)
[My business type]: (digital/physical/hybrid)

Structure the recommendation under these headings:

1. **Touchpoints**: the 3 best moments in the journey (cart, checkout, post-purchase, and so on).
2. **Copy Examples**: one example sentence per touchpoint, written in solution language.
3. **Digital vs Physical**: how the approach differs by product type.
4. **What to Avoid**: the mistakes that break the main purchase flow.

How to use it

  1. Use it before you add an upsell step to your checkout flow, to find the right moment and the right copy first.
  2. Use it to turn your post-purchase thank-you page from a plain confirmation into a natural place for a recommendation.
  3. Use it to understand why your current upsell attempts aren't landing: feed in what you have now and rebuild it.

Example / tip

For a store selling coffee machines, the output suggests putting the recommendation in the order confirmation email rather than on the checkout screen, phrased as 'want to add this filter before your machine arrives', framed as preparation language rather than sales language.

Usage example

Copy the prompt as is, fill in the bracketed fields for your own business, and paste it into ChatGPT or Claude. The more concrete your input, the more useful the output. Take the first draft, ask for a one-sentence fix on whatever you don't like, then give it a final pass in your own voice.

When not to use it

Don't force it if you have no real input to work with. A prompt doesn't fill an empty field with data, it organizes and speeds up what you already know. Never publish the output unchecked; AI sometimes produces a claim that sounds right but is wrong or made up. Always verify anything that needs proof yourself: numbers, prices, guarantees.

Output quality checklist

  • Is the output specific to your input, or generic filler that fits any business? If it's generic, run it again with more concrete input.
  • Does every number, ratio, or claim have something backing it? Delete the unbacked ones or soften them honestly.
  • Does it sound like you? Simplify the cliches and inflated lines in your own voice.
  • Does it give one clear next step? If the reader knows what to do, the output did its job.
